Yasuni Green Gold
Save Yasuni!
Yasuni National Park is one of
the most bio-diverse places on the planet. A
UNESCO bioreseve, is home to many indigenous people including some who
voluntarily maintain no contact with the outside world.
Yasuni Green Gold is a grassroots campaign which works in partnership
with local and indigenous leaders of the Ecuadorian Amazon to fight
for their human and environmental rights. The Yasuní support network
of people and organisations is growing day by day: We work very
closely with The local government of Orellana (Ecuador) and New
Internationalist in UK. We have presence in 4 countries: Spain,Ecuador
Belgium and Uk, but we are developing partnerships with lots
organisations all over the world.
In May 2007 the national government of Ecuador put forward an
innovative idea: They were prepared to leave the oil in the ground in
exchange for financial and political support from the international
community. The deadline to decide to exploit or not has been extended
twice, and now is December 2008.
Yasuni Green Gold wants to make sure the proposal goes forward in its
best and most representative form, respecting the indigenous people
and their human rights, with hope of creating a principal that could
be used by other developing countries to preserve their own cultural
and environmental treasures without having to sacrifice economic
development. And importantly it could lead to way in the fight against
climate change.
We have been lobbying the British Government, the European Parliament
and Commission and doing workshops and interviews all over Europe.
Lots of great things have come out of these meetings such as an
Early-day-motion with the British Government and we are currently
working with members of the European Parliament to devise an official
response to the Ecuadorian Proposal.
Please, help Yasuni!

Selling Textile Machines to support social communication project
As the sewing section of Don Bosco Technical School was closed in 2007 due to the lack of students (growing garment factories in Cambodia took the potential students), the Tech. School opened a new program of social communication. The project is to create a social com. laboratory (radio, television and photography). The program has not yet funds for it. The objective of the program is prepare social communication agents able to improve the quality of social media in Cambodia, open new opportunities of education to children and youth from marginalized areas and follow social campaigns. Currently there are 22 students following the program.
One of the ways to rise funds is the selling of the two textile machines that were donated by Müller in 2006 for the sewing section. Müller agreed that the machines should be sold or moved to another place or organization that could be useful in Cambodia.
We ask to help us in the promotion of the selling of the two machines that are currently on eBay in order to rise funds:
A Raschelina RD3 3/630, Warp knitting machine (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=320319372782).
A Varitex 5 NI 6/30 Textile Machines (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=320319371920).
You can see also the description of the campaign in our blog (http://dbsihanoukville.blogspot.com/2008/11/selling-textile-machines.html).
With the funds from the selling of the machines, we could get the machines for the social communication laboratory. It is also possible to change the textile machines for social communication machines (cameras, mixers, microphones, etc).

Backpacks for Sudan
With two civil wars fought back-to-back, southern Sudan has seen a massive displacement of its people, a total collapse of its social and economic infrastructure, the increase or spread of preventable and treatable diseases, and massive severe suffering for the entire population of the south.
The poverty is unendurable, the illiteracy is immeasurable, and although the violence has ended in the south, those families left behind living in the rural towns and villages are among some of those hardest hit by the four decades of civil war and its related genocide.
Regrettably, the children as always have suffered most these ill effects of war.
The Backpacks for Sudan Campaign aims to supply these children with backpacks filled with school supplies. These backpacks and school supplies will enable children to attend school and focus on their education--the first step in reversing the damage caused by years of war.

Speak Up for Free and Fair Elections in El Salvador!
Call or write your US Representative and ask him or her to sign onto a Dear Colleague letter in support of free and fair elections in El Salvador. The letter is being circulated by Congressmen Jim McGovern (MA) and Dennis Moore (KS), and the staff contact person is Cindy Buhl in Congressman McGovern's office. The letter is currently in circulation in the House of Representatives and signatures will be collected throughout the month of November. Below is a list of talking points to include in your message:
* With the upcoming Municipal, Legislative Assembly, and Presidential elections that will take place in El Salvador on January 18th and March 15th, 2009, I believe the United States can help ensure that the 2009 Salvadoran elections are free, fair, and conducted under the most transparent conditions.
* According to Salvadoran public opinion polls, 54.4% of the population has little or no faith in the 2009 electoral process, and 55% predict fraud in the upcoming elections.
* These will be the most fiercely contested elections in Salvadoran history because the opposition party is leading in public opinion polls, which could lead to changes in long-established patterns of political control.
* I respect the Salvadoran people's sovereign right to choose their leaders, and I believe the US State Department should encourage the Salvadoran government to:
1. Encourage domestic and international observation of the entire electoral process;
2. Urge political parties to stop the use of deceptive or misleading advertising that aims to sway voters' decisions based on fear and misinformation; and
3. Carry out a comprehensive investigation of acts of political violence in the period leading up to elections, on Election Day, and during the post-election transition period.
Presenting these points to your representative will express to them the importance of supporting democracy and free and fair elections in El Salvador.
